Antarctic Sea Ice Projections Constrained by Historical Ice Cover and Future Global Temperature Change

چکیده

There is low confidence in projections of Antarctic sea ice area (SIA), due to deficiencies climate model processes. Ensemble regression techniques can help reduce this uncertainty. We investigate relationships between SIA climatology and 21st century change the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, phase 6 (CMIP6) multi-model ensemble. In summer, under a strong forcing scenario, each loses majority its ice. Therefore, models with greater historical exhibit reductions, so observed strongly constrains projections. spread summer smaller than CMIP 5 (CMIP5), CMIP6 gives more robust constraint on future SIA. winter, by 2100 40% disappears average, ensemble mean explains approximately half projected change. A winter loss CMIP5 explained higher sensitivities some models.

Seasonal change of antarctic sea ice cover.

The winter expansion of the sea ice surrounding Antarctica and the subsequent retreat of the ice in summer may be linked with the wind stress acting on the Southern Ocean in conjunction with the heat exchange in open water regions within the ice fields.

Snow on Antarctic Sea Ice

Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...

Sea-level feedback lowers projections of future Antarctic Ice-Sheet mass loss

The stability of marine sectors of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) in a warming climate has been identified as the largest source of uncertainty in projections of future sea-level rise. Sea-level fall near the grounding line of a retreating marine ice sheet has a stabilizing influence on the ice sheets, and previous studies have established the importance of this feedback on ice age AIS evolution...

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Variability and Its Global Connectivity

This study statistically evaluates the relationship between Antarctic Sea Ice extent and global climate variability. Temporal cross-correlations between detrended Antarctic sea ice edge (SIE) anomaly and various climate indices are calculated. For the sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean, as well as the tropical Pacific precipitation, a coher...
